Trans visibility is more important than ever

The last 12 months have been especially challenging for those of us in the trans community all around the world. We have seen restrictions on gender affirming care, bathroom bans, political culture wars, executive orders, and an increase in hate attacks. We have become targets for those wishing to spread fear and re-establish old gender roles. Sadly, we have also been abandoned by some of those who should be fighting with us. It’s amongst these frightening times that we need to hold strong and support each other the most, and when visibility becomes all the more important.

In the face of vilification

The sad truth is that this political climate means so many of our Trans siblings need to take a step back for their own safety. In their case, to be visible is like wearing a target, and they could quickly find themselves victims of violence and verbal abuse. The idea of having to withdraw in such a way to stay safe is horrifying to me as I am sure it feels almost like being forced back into the closet when we are afraid of coming out. Regardless of this danger, there are many in these situations that still have their signs of resistance, and while I admire their courage, it is important to recognise that everyone’s situation is different. Therefore, it falls to those of us who have the ability and desire to be visible to represent those who feel they must stay silent.

We aren’t going anywhere

Let those of us who remain visible continue to be a symbol and support for our trans siblings doing it tough around the world. Let them draw strength knowing that they are not alone. Let them find those small moments of freedom and joy where every they can be found.

To those who would oppress the trans community, who would take action to drive us into the shadows and extinguish our freedom. Know that no matter your actions, we are here, we have always been here, and we will continue to be here. We are bold, brilliant, brave, and beautiful, and we aren’t going anywhere.
