The Sash – A childhood memory

I wrote this poem years ago reflecting on a recuring and positive childhood memory of going to the football at the MCG to watch Essendon play back in the late 90s & early 2000s. Obviously, this was a period of success, and we could go to the footy each week, don the sash, almost expecting victory. The enduring memory isn’t the results but the atmosphere of the game from walking to the ground, the noise of the crowd and barracking for our “boys that play this grand old game.” Recently taking my son to a game at the G’ and walking that same old asphalt path, sitting in my family’s reserved seats in The Great Southern Stand (now the Shane Warne Stand) and supporting current team was special. It reminded me of this poem, and I thought it was the right time to share it with the world.
