During my time teaching multiple senior classes across English, Geography and History it was abundantly clear that students were lacking underlying academic writing skills. This meant that students with the appropriate relevant content knowledge were not maximising their marks and due to an ability to articulate things concisely. Unfortunately, a crowded curriculum means there is limited time to work on writing skills beyond essay structure and even less of a chance for emphasising the application of cross curriculum skills.
Writing my solution
To address this diffiency and help support students I developed an optional academic short course focusing on building clarity, cohesian and academic voice accross subject areas. These skills in part built on students exisiting work in the English classroom around TEEL (TEAL) paragraphs to add depth and transfer these skills to their short answer responses in other subjects. The course covers appoxamtly 15 mini lessons that incorpeate a variety of tips and and advice to improve student work. Since implementing the program 3 years ago I have made the decision to share my program online so that other students might benefit and improve thier writing.
